SITPicks.com 9 Football 9 Andrew Luck Says There Is No Reason To Freak Out…But He’s Wrong

Posted on July 29, 2017, by Travis Pulver

For fans of the Indianapolis Colts, it has been a long summer. They have been dying to hear news about the surgically repaired throwing shoulder of their team’s superstar quarterback, Andrew Luck, but have heard nothing. Somehow the team has managed to keep any information from leaking.

However, as long as time was on their side, they had no reason to worry. But time is no longer on their side. Training camp is in progress. The regular season will be here before you know it. Will the Indianapolis Colts have their starting quarterback behind center or not?

No one knows, or if they do—they aren’t talking. However, if you listen to Luck, there is no reason to worry.

“I would say that there’s no reason to freak out,” Luck told reporters Saturday. “I will be better than I was coming into this coming out. I know that. I don’t know what day it’s going to be, I don’t know what week, I don’t know when it’s going to be but I definitely will be. So, there’s no reason to freak out….”

Hmmm…often times, when people keep telling you not to freak out it is because they know the truth of the matter is something that would make you freak out. When a superstar tries to press the importance of the team over any one person, suspicious minds can’t help but wonder.

“…And on that note, football is the greatest team game in the world. No one person is bigger than the team, and I’ve always felt that. We’ve got a solid, solid team that is forming at this complex. So, no reason to freak out.”

Yes, it is a nice thing to say, but is he saying it just to be nice? Or is he saying it in support of his teammates who will be playing without him in the weeks to come?

It would have been nice to hear he is close enough to healthy that he will definitely be available for Week One. But Luck couldn’t do it.

“We are not going to rush it, to rush it. I think that would be the worst thing we could do. The end game is for me to better than I was before I was injured and I don’t want to put a date on that.”

To be fair, the approach is a logical one. The team isn’t just looking to this season. They want to make sure Luck is 100 percent healthy now, so something more serious doesn’t happen that could knock him out long term.

But shouldn’t they know something by now? If so, why not keep the fans informed? Should they just take Luck at his word and not freak out?

No—in fact, fans should freak out, but just a little.

There is no telling what the defense is going to look like this year. It was not very good last season. While the team made some personnel changes, there is no telling how these guys are going to perform until they step on the field.

With Luck’s health being such a concern, you would think the team would have attempted to make some changes on the offensive line. Yes, they did improve as the season went on, but the beatings Luck has taken as the Colts quarterback are taking their toll. The team must do a better job of protecting Luck. But there is no reason to think the same subpar offensive line they had last season will suddenly become good.

Maybe if the team had some better playmakers to help Luck out, the offensive line would not be a big deal. But Frank Gore is past his prime and no longer concerns defensive coordinators like he once did. T.Y. Hilton is good, but he’s pretty much all the team has. Phillip Dorsett has not lived up to the hype, and Donte Moncrief is just okay on his best days.

So—should fans be freaking out?

Yes, but not because of Andrew Luck’s shoulder. The team had a number of problems last season and they did little to fix them.  Jim Irsay will soon learn that just proclaiming issues fixed does not mean they are fixed.

It doesn’t work for Jerry Jones, and it will not work for him.
