Boston will look to keep pace with the red hot first place Orioles in the American League East Saturday afternoon as they play host to the Houston Astros for game 3 of their 4-game series.
After splitting the first two games of the series, the Red Sox will send right handed pitcher Clay Buchholz to the mound to take on righty Collin McHugh for the Astros.
After a slow start to the season, McHugh has won his last 3 starts with an ERA of 3.57 during that span and a WHIP of 1.188. However, he’s been much less impressive on the road as he’s currently carrying an 11.82 ERA and a WHIP of 2.064 as the visiting pitcher.
Clay Buchholz has been a bit inconsistent at times this year, but has won his last 2 starts. He enters Saturday’s game with a 5.90 ERA and a 2-3 record on the season.
The story for the Boston Red Sox this season hasn’t been the pitching, even though it’s been consistently good for the most part, but rather the lineup. The Red Sox bats have come alive in a big way over the last week or so of the season. They scored in double digits runs in 4 consecutive games, a hard thing to do in today’s game. They were only slightly cooled off Friday night as they were edged out by the Astros by a count of 7-6.
Houston currently finds themselves one game out of last place in the American League West, and will need to start showing more consistency particularly at the plate if they want to get back into contention this season. There’s still plenty of time left, and while they have shown some fight at points this year, they’ll need to keep pace if they want to be in position after the All Star Break.
