About Stadium

A multi-purpose facility located in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Tire Centre serves primarily as the home-ice for the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators.

The arena was originally named The Palladium, and then the Corel Centre from 1996 to 2006, then Scotiabank Place from 2006 to 2013 before receiving its current namesake.

In addition to being the home arena for the Ottawa Senators the venue also hosts a number of other sporting events each year, as well as countless music concerts.

The stadium was constructed on top of acres of farmland in the Ottawa area, and required rezoning measures in order to approve construction on the land.

History

• Construction of the stadium was completed in around two and a half years with construction beginning on July 7, 1994 and the opening of the stadium held on January 15, 1996.

• The project originally struggled to find funding, but on August 17, 1993, Bruce Firestone, the owner of the Ottawa Senators was replaced by Rod Bryden, who was able to secure enough financial backing for the project.

• In 2005, an Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame was added to the second floor of the venue. The area features memorabilia from Ottawa sports stars from years past along with information about the success of past teams.

• The naming rights to the stadium were bought by Canadian Tire on June 18, 2013, and the name of the arena was consequently renamed to the Canadian Tire Centre that year.
