The Cleveland Browns are not a very good team, but until the season starts, they have just as much of a chance as anyone to win it all like everyone else. But if they are ever going to climb out of the cellar, they are going to have to get a legitimate player to step up at one position, quarterback. Last season the team saw five guys play quarterback, Cody Kessler, Josh McCown, Robert Griffin III, Charlie Whitehurst, and Kevin Hogan.
Kessler got the bulk of the work playing in nine games, but he didn’t exactly play well. There is hope that Cody Kessler could improve and become that guy. They drafted former Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer. For the time being, Brock Osweiler still has a spot on the roster as well.

Cleveland has no clue whether they have someone who can adequately perform the duties the job of ‘starting quarterback in the NFL’ requires. But they have to give someone a chance to prove it heading into training camp.

It seems head coach Hue Jackson has made his choice.
“Cody Kessler will walk out there first,” Jackson said, per The Plain Dealer. “He deserves a chance to walk out there first.”
It doesn’t matter who starts training camp as the first-team quarterback. Someone has to take snaps with the first team. It makes sense that the guy who took the most for them last year begins the season as the team’s No. 1 quarterback. Osweiler didn’t exactly do anything impressive in Houston and Kizer is a rookie. There really wasn’t any other choice.
Fans that want Kizer should not worry. Starting camp with the job does not mean he is going to end camp with it. Jackson is going to want to see what all three can do with the first time. So, at one time or another, all three will get some work in with the first team.
Should Kessler falter, whoever is playing better at the time, will get a shot. Talk throughout the offseason workouts has been positive for Kizer and Osweiler. But not so much for Kessler.
So—who will emerge as the Browns QB1 when training camp is done?

It will be between Kizer and Kessler. It is hard to imagine Osweiler winning a starting job anywhere after the disastrous season he had in Houston last year. More than likely, he’ll end up being cut before the preseason is over.
Kessler will probably win the role, but chances are he will not keep it the entire season. Kizer has the most upside, but that is only because he has yet to play a down in the NFL. There is no telling how good he will be. But the last thing the Browns want to do is inject him into the starting lineup before he is ready for it.
However, what do the Browns do if they start the season with six straight losses (or more)? Do they throw Kizer to the wolves and see if he can figure it out?
As nice as it would be to think the Browns may not have to worry about answering that question, history tells us otherwise.
