There are a lot of people who spend their Sunday on the couch watching NFL games or their Friday night at a sports bar or friend’s house watching NBA and NHL action, thinking that betting on their favorite games is really easy. They think they’re picking winners all the time and so they should start placing real bets.

You may be really good, but consider the fact that even the best gamblers are right no more than 60% of the time. That means you have to be really good at what you’re doing to be successful.

It’s the trap that a lot of rookies get caught up in. To avoid making these kinds of mistakes, here are some mistakes you should not make if you are a rookie sports bettor.

Trusting Your Hunch

This is one of the most common mistakes. Too many people watch television crime shows and will hear the police detective say how it was a hunch that led them to the assailant. Maybe that works on TV, but when you are betting on a sport your hunches are useless.

The reason you should place a bet on any contest is because you have done your research and have discovered that the odds are in your favor to go with a particular contest. Understand that a person placing a bet based on their hunch is really doing nothing more than guessing. That’s not a good way to win.

It’s one thing to go to the roulette wheel in Las Vegas and throw five dollars down on 14 because you have a hunch it’s going to be the number. After all, you have the same odds of winning with any other number. That’s not true with sports gambling. You can improve your odds, and hunches are not the way to do that.

Playing the Parlay

The parlay is where three or more bets our combined into one. What that means is that you have to be right about every one of those wagers for you to win any money. It is true that this can be a very lucrative bet, but understand that all it takes is for one of those contests to go the wrong way and you lost.

Keep in mind that the people who love the parlay bet are the sportsbooks themselves. They provide really good odds for a person who wins because they know that gamblers rarely do. Don’t make this mistake.

Betting with Your Heart

This is kind of like the hunch but is something quite a bit different. A lot of times people will place wagers on teams they absolutely love or hate. You may hate the New York Yankees. Every time they play you hope that they get creamed. However, they are one of the best teams in baseball and believing they are going to lose on most nights is not reasonable.

You want to avoid bets where your heart is in the contest. Unless you have done a great deal of research and are absolutely sure that this is the smart wager, do not bet on teams you like or strongly dislike.

Betting Money to Pay Your Bills

If you are short of cash and betting on this week’s NFL action is the way you were going to earn money to make your payments, then know your situation is about to get significantly worse. You should only wager money that you know you can afford to lose.

You may be right. You may earn a lot of money on this week’s games. Understand what the flipside of that is, however. If you lose, then you are in even more in debt. That will likely make you more inclined to start wagering to try to make up for your losses and the amount of money you need to pay your bills. Can you see the vicious circle that’s developing? It’s something that far too many rookie gamblers do.

Go with Your System

One of the biggest rookie mistakes is betting using a system they have developed. They have figured out by using some kind of mathematical formula or algorithm that they have got a method that can beat the odds.

A betting system is nothing more than a method of choosing your bets based upon what happened in previous wagers. What you need to understand is that sportsbooks have created their odds based upon previous contests. They have done a huge amount of research and so they have created odds that gives them the best chance to win.

The only system that works is to do a lot of research and to be wise in the choices you make. There are good articles out there that can help you to be smart when placing bets on contests. Go out and read those before deciding to run with your system.

Going Until Your Drop

There is one last mistake we want to cover. If you are going to be successful in anything, you have to take care of yourself. Don’t place bets on any game when you had to work for 16 straight hours. If you haven’t been resting well, your diet is terrible, and you’re fighting with your wife, this is not the time to place a wager.

People do that because they believe that the adrenaline rush will compensate for their fatigue. They place wagers at this time because it gives them something else to think about other than the fight they had with their spouse. That doesn’t make you a smart gambler.

These are the kind of mistakes that will cost you money in the long run. While you may be successful doing them one or two times, you can guarantee that in a full season of sports you are going to be a big loser by the end. There is no replacement for hard work, and if you were going to be a successful gambler then doing the work and research is how you will succeed.
