About Stadium

Located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Consol Energy Center is an indoor, multi-purpose venue that primarily elves as the home-ice for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.

In addition to being the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, it also served as home for the Arena Football league’s Pittsburgh Power from 2011 to 2014 when the club was discontinued.

The Consol Energy Center replaced the Penguins old home-ice arena, the Civic Arena, which was originally known as Mellon Arena in 1961 when it was completed.

Upon opening in 2012, the Consol Energy Center was applauded as one of the best overall arenas in the world, and won a few awards as a result.

History

• The Lemieux Group, who bought the Penguins in 1999, looked at a number of options for the location to build their replacement arena for the Penguins old home, the Civic Arena. They eventually reached an agreement with Isle of Capri Casinos to allow for them to use slots, in order to avoid public funding for the stadium.

• The construction of the stadium took just four days over two years with grounding being brown on August 14, 2008 and the arena opening on August 18, 2010.

• On April 8, 2008 the architect firm, Populous, submitted their first design renderings for the arena and were met with much disappointment. One specific critic said of the design, “If I put a Home Depot sign on that, it looks like a Home Depot.”

• The naming rights for the arena were purchased by Consol Energy in December of 2008 who promptly named the arena Consol Energy Center.
