  • Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

The Cubs lost five of their last six games before Thursday’s clash at San Diego. They allowed Milwaukee to catch them in the race for the wild-card spot in the National League. Therefore, the Cubs have to find the way to dominate a three-game set with Pittsburgh at home.

Jon Lester will take the mound for the Cubs in the opener. The lefty is 12-10 this season with a 4.51 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. The Cubs won four of Jon’s last six starts, while Lester is 11-6 in 21 starts against Pittsburgh.

On the other side, the Pirates have been playing in an on-off form lately. Entering Thursday’s clash at the Giants, Pittsburgh was 4-5 over the last nine outings. The Pirates are sitting bottom of the NL Central and have nothing to play for here.

Steven Brault will toe the slab for the Pirates who lost seven of Steven’s last nine starts. Brault is 4-4 this season with a 4.13 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP and 0-1 in four starts and nine relief apps against the Cubs.

Both teams struggled against the southpaw starting pitcher this season. The Cubs are 13-18, while the Pirates are 14-23. The Cubs are 6-1 in their last seven meetings with the Pirates and 7-1 in the previous eight in Chicago. The hosts are desperate to keep these trends alive, so take them to win.

  • Chicago Cubs -162 over Pittsburgh Pirates

  • Washington State vs. Houston Cougars

For the first time since 1988, the Washington State Cougars (2-0) will take on the Houston Cougars (1-1). The bookies expect to see an interesting game, setting Washington State as a 9.5-point fave. The line on the totals is sky-high at 73.5 points, but taking the over seems like a reasonable choice.

Both teams rely on their powerful offenses. Washington State dropped 58 points on New Mexico State and 59 on Northern Colorado. Houston scored 31 points in a loss at Oklahoma and 37 in a win to Prairie View.

Washington State’s QB Anthony Gordon has already tossed for 884 yards and nine touchdowns. RB Max Borghi had 128 rushing yards in the opener and two TD in Week 2. Still, Washington State’s defense will be on a tough assignment against the Houston Cougars’ offense.

Washington State allowed 216 rushing yards last week. On the other side, Houston racked up 241 rushing yards at Oklahoma and 236 against Prairie View. Their QB D’Eriq King can tote the ball a lot, while RB Kyle Porter posted 33 carries for 160 yards over the first two weeks.

The over is 7-1 in Washington State’s last eight outings away from home, and it is 7-2 in Houston’s previous nine showings at NRG Stadium.

As well as the visitors, the Houston Cougars will have a tall task to slow down their rivals’ offense. Houston surrendered 686 total yards at Oklahoma and 318 to Prairie View’s hapless offense. Hereof, I expect to see a high-scoring affair at NRG Stadium tonight.
