WHAT’S ON TAP IN SPORTS FOR MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2019:

It’s a quiet Monday in major sports. We’ll see only four games in the National Hockey League, while the New England Patriots visit the New York Jets in the ultimate clash of the NFL Week 7. Hereof, let’s take a look at the odds along with our best betting picks of the day:

  • Ottawa Senators vs. Dallas Stars

While we’ve expected to see the Ottawa Senators (1-5-1) struggling, the Dallas Stars (2-7-1) are one of the most unpleasant surprises of the first three weeks of the 2019-20 NHL season.

Interestingly, the Senators’ lone victory came against the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 at home. They are on a three-game losing streak following a 5-2 defeat at Arizona. It was the Senators’ third loss on the road this season.

On the other side, the Stars are coming off a 4-1 victory at the Philadelphia Flyers. They snapped a five-game skid to finish a four-game road trip. The Stars lost all their three games on the home ice this term. Hereof, the clash with the Senators is a perfect opportunity for the first home victory.

The Stars are 30th in the NHL in goals per game (2.10), but the Senators are just two spots ahead with 2.29 goals per contest. While the Stars are allowing 3.00 goals per outing (13th in the NHL), the Senators are allowing 3.71 goals per contest (27th).

Dallas won only one of its last six encounters with Ottawa, and it was their previous duel in Texas. The Stars are 7-4 in their last 11 home meetings with the Senators who lost 13 of their last 17 road tilts.

Dallas is a better team on a paper, and after a good performance in Philadelphia, the Stars will be keen to record their first victory in front of the home fans. The money line odds are not attractive, so give me the Stars at puck line odds.

  • Dallas Stars +110 over Ottawa Senators by two or more goals

  • New England Patriots vs. New York Jets

The Jets upset the odds last week, beating the Dallas Cowboys 24-22 for their first win of the season. Now, the Jets will have a much taller task against the reigning champions who are 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS on the season.

The Patriots have huge problems with injuries. Tight ends Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse, WR Josh Gordon, and RB Rex Burkhead are all out. WR Julian Edelman is listed as questionable. The Pats will have to rely on their ground game, hoping their defense will make a difference once more.

New England’s D is the best in the NFL, surrendering only 8.0 points on 234.7 total yards per outing. On the other side, the Jets are allowing 24.6 points per game (21st in the NFL), but their run defense is surrendering 95.8 yards per contest (13th).

Therefore, I don’t expect to see a bunch of points here. Six of the last seven meetings between the Patriots and Jets went in the under. Likewise, the under is 7-2 in the Pats’ last nine tilts on the road, and it is 4-2 in the Jets’ previous six games overall. Give me the under on the totals.

  • Under 43.5 points at -105
