  • Houston Astros vs. Kansas City Royals

The Astros take on the Royals in the closing contest of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. The visitors won the opener to snap their three-game skid and entered Saturday’s middle contest with a 9-2 record in their last 11 meetings with the Royals.

Both teams have been playing well lately. Houston is 15-5 in its last 20 games overall, while Kansas City is 8-4 in its previous 12 outings. Still, the Royals beat some arguably poor teams, recording a couple of wins against Baltimore, Detroit, and Miami.

Wade Miley will take the mound for the Astros. The lefty will be keen to bounce back from a horrible display against Oakland this past Tuesday. Miley allowed seven hits and earned runs in the first inning. He’s 13-5 this season with a 3.74 ERA and 4-2 in six starts against the Royals in a career.

On the other side, Jakob Junis will take the hill for the hosts. The right-hander is 9-13 this season with a 5.06 ERA and 0-2 in three starts against the Astros in his career. The Royals lost three of Junis’ last five starts and three of his previous five starts at home.

The Astros need a win here to keep the pace with the Yankees and Dodgers in their race for the best record in the league. Ten of the Astros’ last 12 wins at home came by two or more runs, so take them to cover.

  • Houston Astros -140 over Kansas City Royals by two or more runs

  • Los Angeles Chargers vs. Detroit Lions

The LA Chargers needed overtime to beat Indianapolis 30-24 at home in the opening week. Now, they will try to become road warriors once again. The Chargers went 7-1 straight up and ATS on the road this past regular season.

On the other side, the Detroit Lions earned a 27-27 tie at Arizona. They blew an 18-point lead, allowing the Cardinals to tie the game with 43 seconds left on the clock. The Lions are 1-4 straight up and ATS in their last five showings at home.

Both Philip Rivers and Matthew Stafford had good games in Week 1. Rivers tossed for 333 yards, three TD, and an interception. Stafford threw for 385 yards and three TD. The Chargers’ ground looked well without Melvin Gordon, averaging 6.0 yards per carry. The Lions had just 3.6 yards per carry.

The Lions offensive line struggles with injuries which will be a problem against the Chargers’ defense. Melvin Gordon and Joey Bosa will be a huge threat for Matthew Stafford. Detroit couldn’t surpass a 20-point mark in five straight home games, while the Chargers limited their rivals below 18 points in five of their last eight road contests.

The bookies expect to see a thrilling battle, but I would be surprised if the hosts win. The Chargers have more offensive firepower than the Lions. Also, their defense looks much better than Detroit’s. Take the visitors at money line odds.

  • Los Angeles Chargers at -123

  • Sporting Kansas City vs. LA Galaxy

With five games more to go, LA Galaxy is one point behind the playoff spot and five points ahead of Sporting Kansas City. It’s a huge game for both teams, so I would avoid taking the side bet. Instead, I would go with the hosts to score at least two goals.

LA Galaxy scored two or more goals in four straight outings at home and in six of their previous seven in Los Angeles. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is healthy and will lead the front line. He’s bagged 23 goals in 24 appearances this season.

Likewise, the Galaxy defeated Sporting 2-0 in Kansas City back in May. Sporting won three of their last four games overall but allowed two or more goals in six of their previous nine outings on the road.

  • LA Galaxy over 1.5 goals at -125
