- Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres
The Chicago Cubs will take on the San Diego Padres in the second of a four-game series at Petco Park in San Diego. While the hosts have nothing to play for, the Cubs desperately need a win. Chicago is just two games ahead of the Brewers in the National League wild-card race.
The Cubs have been playing in a shaky form, entering the series with the Padres on a three-game losing streak. Likewise, the Cubs lost five of their last 12 games overall and seven of the previous 14 on the road.
On the other side, the Padres lost five of their previous ten contests overall prior to the opening clash of the Cubs series. They are 5-8 in the previous 13 outings at home and 7-11 in the last 18 home encounters with the NL Central.
The Cubs should have a huge advantage on the mound tonight. They will start Jose Quintana who’s 13-8 this season and 83-76 in his career, while the Padres will counter with rookie Ronald Bolanos who’ll get his second starting nod of the season.
Bolanos lost his start against the Diamondbacks, pitching six innings to allow five hits and two earned runs. Quintana, on the other side, is 2-0 in three starts against the Padres in his career. The Cubs are 8-2 in his last ten starts, while Quintana has a 4.00 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 2019.
Although they are playing on the road, the Cubs should dominate the Padres with Quintana on the mound. San Diego had a lot of problems against the southpaw starting pitchers in 2019, recording 11 wins and 19 losses.
Furthermore, the Cubs are 9-4 in their last 13 meetings with the Padres and 8-3 in the previous 11 at Petco Park. These two teams met each other in July, and the Cubs defeated the Padres 2-1 in a three-game set in Chicago.
There is so much on the table for the Cubs here, so I expect them to grab a victory. Likewise, Jose Quintana is pitching in a good form, and he beat the Padres back in July. Quintana pitched five innings in a 6-5 victory, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out seven.
- Chicago Cubs -145 over San Diego Padres
