Football players are often full of surprises. High school players have been known to shock fans with their choice of colleges. College players have surprised fans by declaring for the draft with a season or two of eligibility left. NFL players often surprise us by signing with different teams when they test free agency.

But NFL players tend to surprise us more with the incredibly stupid things some of them tend to do that put their careers in jeopardy—like Houston Texans rookie running back D’Onta Foreman recently did.

The former running back for the Texas Longhorns was arrested in Austin over the weekend on charges of marijuana possession and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Foreman was arrested back on his old stomping grounds Sunday morning around three in the morning. Brian Davis reported in the Austin American Statesman that officers responded to calls about a marijuana smell coming from three cars parked near one of the residence halls. When they arrived, they found marijuana in each vehicle and a firearm.

“The owner of the firearm, D’Onta Foreman, was arrested for Unlawful Carrying of Weapons and Possession of Marijuana and booked into Travis County Jail. Six other male suspects were cited and released for Possession of Marijuana.

“None of them are UT students and they are not believed to have UT affiliations.”

Everyone has their own opinion about marijuana use and whether it should be legal or not. It is legal to carry a gun in the state of Texas as long as the person doing so is properly licensed. So, to some Foreman’s arrest should not be an issue (even though weapons possession does become a legal issue when drugs and/or alcohol are involved).

Foreman’s lawyer has since released a statement claiming his client did not use or possess marijuana. He also says his client alerted police to his gun and that it was stored properly.

But the fact remains that marijuana is still frowned upon in the NFL. The league doesn’t like it when players are arrested on gun-related charges as well. While Foreman did not fail a drug test, being arrested for possession and a gun charge is likely going to result in some sort of punishment per the league’s conduct policy.

So— what does this mean for the Houston Texans? For the time being— nothing. Until the league decides he has violated the conduct policy, it will be business as usual. But getting in trouble with the law will not earn him any brownie points with Texans head coach Bill O’Brien.

Foreman already put himself in Bill O’Brien’s dog house when he reported to minicamp overweight. He played at 249 lbs. but weighed in at the Combine at 233 lbs. Exactly how much weight he packed on wasn’t made public.

But along with learning the system, he has been working at getting down to a better playing weight.

The Texans have yet to comment on the arrest. Chances are if they do they will just make the standard comment. We are looking into it and have no comment at this time.

The best-case scenario for Foreman will be a serious slap on the wrist since he has not violated the league’s conduct policy before. But the most damage will probably come to his reputation in general.

Does he care more about playing football or hanging out and smoking weed with his friends?
