About Stadium

Most commonly referred to as The Super Dome, or simply The Dome, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is home to the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.

Located in the Central Business District of downtown New Orleans, the stadium opened on August 3, 1975, and temporarily closed after Hurrican Katrina, before reopening on September 25, 2006.

Because of the stadium’s large size and great location, it often makes the short list of candidates for big time sporting events such as the Super Bow, NCAAF Championship Game, and the Final Four.

The stadium has played host to Super Bowls dating back to 1978. Specifically, Super Bowl XII, Super Bowl, XV, Super Bowl XX, Super Bowl XXIV, Super Bowl XXXI, Super Bowl XXXVI, and Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.

History

• In 2005, the stadium served as temporary shelter for victims of Hurricane Katrina which left hundreds of thousands of people without homes. The stadium itself was also greatly damaged during the hurricane and went through renovations before being reopened on September, 25, 2006.

• The German car company, Mercedes-Benz, bought the naming rights to the venue on October 3, 2011. It’s the 3rd stadium in the world that Mercedes-Benz has purchased the naming rights to.

• The dome played host to a number of Super Bowls, including Super Bowl XLVII in 2013 between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. A game that will always be remembered for the 30-minute power outtage that occurred after halftime, which shifted the momentum and helped the 49ers get back in the game, before losing in the final minutes by a score of 34-31.

• The BCS Championship Game has been played at the Sueprdome four times, and the NCAAF Playoff Semifinal Game is hosted there every 3 years.
