Of all the free agents that remain unsigned, one of the most overlooked has been former St. Louis Cardinals starter Lance Lynn. Before he missed all of 2016 because of Tommy John surgery, he was one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball. He also bounced back nicely in 2017, posting a 3.43 ERA over 33 starts. Recent rumors indicate that as many as seven or eight teams are interested in him. Lynn will likely have to wait until Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta are off the board. But when he finally signs, one team is going to get a steal. Here’s a closer look at the teams with the best shot at signing Lynn.

Brewers – 20%

The Brewers appear intent on signing another starter before the season. They would prefer a true ace like Darvish or Arrieta, but it remains to be seen whether they have the funds to sign either. If they lose out on both, look for Milwaukee to make Lynn a priority.

Cubs – 10%

It looks like the Cubs will add another starter one way or another this winter. However, Lynn appears to be a little down on their wish list. Chicago is still among the favorites for Darvish. There’s also reason to believe the Cubs are high on Alex Cobb, making Lynn their third or fourth choice at this point.

Mets – 10%

The Mets aren’t exactly desperate to add another starter. But adding a durable veteran like Lynn could be exactly what they need. The Mets did a great job of being patient and signing Todd Frazier at a bargain price, and if the price for him drops enough, they could do the same with Lynn.

Nationals – 10%

The Nationals aren’t likely to spend a lot between now and the start of the season. However, they do have some uncertainty toward the back end of their rotation. They also appear to be approaching the end of their championship window. The Nationals have shown some interest in Lynn, and for the right price, they’d definitely like to add him to their starting rotation.

Orioles – 15%

When it comes to their rotation, the Orioles definitely fall into the category of desperate. Baltimore believes they can compete for a playoff spot in 2018, but it’ll be tough without a major upgrade to their rotation. They haven’t been connected to Darvish or Arrieta, but the Orioles have reportedly had negotiations with Lynn. Nothing substantial has come of those talks, but the Orioles should still be considered a dark horse to sign Lynn, who would likely become their ace.

Rays – 5%

It’s no doubt surprising to see the Rays interested in Lynn. However, if his price tag drops enough, Tampa Bay could potentially afford him, especially if they trade Jake Odorizzi. Right now, it seems like a long shot, but the Rays are reportedly among the teams to express interest in Lynn.

Twins – 20%

With the news that Ervin Santana could miss the first month of the season, the Twins are more motivated than ever to sign a frontline starter. It’s no secret that they want Darvish, but Minnesota may not be able to afford him. The same could be true of Arrieta. That could leave Lynn at the top of Minnesota’s wish list.

The Field – 10%

Based on how the market has unfolded this winter, it wouldn’t be that shocking to see a team come out of nowhere to sign Lynn, especially if the price to sign him drops. The Cardinals apparently have no interest in a reunion, but that could change. It’s also wouldn’t be out of the question to see teams like the Angels, Giants, Mariners, Phillies, or Yankees suddenly have interest in signing Lynn.
