SITPicks.com 9 Football 9 Monday Night Football Recap: Broncos Defense Plays Well But Chiefs Defense Plays Even Better

Posted on October 31, 2017, by Travis Pulver

If the Denver Broncos were going to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, they needed two things. They needed a better game out of Trevor Siemian and the offense and the usual dominant effort by the defense.

They only got one.

As could be expected, the Denver defense played very well; good enough to keep them competitive for much of the game. They held the Chiefs sensational rookie running back, Kareem Hunt, to less than 100 total yards from scrimmage for the first time in his young career (68 total yards; 46 rushing and 22 receiving).

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who is on his way to setting a new single-season record for completion percentage, had his most inaccurate game of the year. He completed just 14 of 31 pass attempts (45.2 percent) for 202 yards and a single touchdown.

Tight end Travis Kelce hauled in seven of Smith’s passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Denver’s defense held the Chiefs to just 276 yards of offense on the night. But thanks to five turnovers by the offense, Kansas City didn’t need to do much on offense to win.

The first came early in the game when Jamaal Charles fumbled. Marcus Peters scooped the ball up and returned the ball for a touchdown to give Kansas City a 7-0 lead. Denver ended up turning the ball over five times (three interceptions, two fumbles) resulting in 13 points for the Chiefs.

The Broncos were behind 17-3 at the half, but the offense woke up enough in the second half to pull within seven, 20-13, late in the third quarter following a 10-play, 80-yard drive. But then the Chiefs extended the lead back out to ten points with another field goal early in the fourth.

After a turnover on downs on Denver’s next drive, the Chiefs tacked another field to make the score 26-13 with 7:04 to play.  They tack on another before the end of the game and Denver would add another touchdown to make the final score 29-19, Chiefs.

Smith was honest during his post-game interview and admitted it wasn’t a pretty game for the offense. But he wasn’t concerned about it.

“I mean, yeah, I wasn’t totally expecting it to be [pretty] — two really good teams, division game, a lot on the line,” Smith said in the postgame on-field interview on ESPN (CBSSports). “One of the best defenses in the NFL. We played good team football tonight.”

They may not need to be much better next week when they face the Dallas Cowboys. The news broke during the game that Ezekiel Elliot would have to start serving his suspension barring any last-minute legal maneuvers.

For the Broncos, it is almost a shame that they had to lose. But when the offense makes as many mistakes as it did, that’s what happens. If they are going to have any hopes of making a playoff push, they will need to figure the offense out—and soon.

It is not going to get any easier for the Broncos next week. They get to travel to Philadelphia to take on the red-hot Eagles.
