Oakland Raiders (1-6) vs. San Francisco 49ers (1-7) at Levi’s Stadium, San Francisco, California

NFL Week 9: 8:20 ET on Thursday, November 1, 2018

The night after Halloween, there is a real scary football game being played as two teams with one victory each square off in the battle of the Bay Area as the 1-6 Oakland Raiders take on the 1-7 San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco enters this game as losers of six straight games while Oakland has lost their last three.

The Raiders have won seven of the 13 battles between these two teams over the years. The last time these two teams faced each other, the Raiders won at home 24-13, December 7, 2014.

21 Point Fourth Quarter Dooms Raiders, 42-28

The Oakland Raiders had a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but 21 unanswered points by the Indianapolis Colts doomed Oakland as they fell 42-28. Derek Carr had arguably his best game of the season, completing 75% of his passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, but he could not stop the tide in the fourth quarter.

Marlon Mack ran for two touchdowns in the final frame and had 132 yards total on the day. Indianapolis recorded 114 more yards of total offense that Oakland did, and had 28 first downs to 19 for the Raiders. They also dominated the time of possession by 13 minutes.

Oakland has made a number of moves over the last week, as the team is already prepped to start looking forward to the 2019 season. Amari Cooper was traded and running back Marshawn Lynch was placed on injured reserve. This should be the start of a complete overhaul of this team.

Carr has had a solid season, throwing for 2027 yards, but has 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in just seven games. Those are not the kind of numbers that people are expecting from a quarterback that many believed to be the next elite one in the NFL. With Lynch done for the year, the running back duties will fall on Doug Martin, who has 40 carries for 171 yards this season. Lynch was the only running back who had a rushing touchdown this year for Oakland.

The Raiders are averaging 19.7 points per game and 369.7 yards of total offense. They are giving up on average 31.1 points per game and 407.4 yards of offense.

49ers Blow 12 Points Lead to Lose Sixth Straight

The San Francisco 49ers lost their six straight game this past weekend, falling to the Arizona Cardinals 18-15, despite owning a 12 point lead with 13 minutes left in the game. Quarterback Josh Rosen threw for two touchdown passes in the final quarter, with the final coming with just 34 seconds left in the game to give Arizona the win.

C.J. Beathard continues to start with Jimmy Garoppolo out with an injury. In seven games, he is strong for 1252 yards and eight touchdowns but has also thrown seven interceptions. He is been sacked 18 times and San Francisco quarterbacks have been sacked 35 times this season.

Matt Breida leads an anemic rushing attack for San Francisco, gaining 487 yards and two touchdowns on 84 carries. Alfred Morris a second on the team with 281 yards, but has required 77 carries to get to that mark.

The 49ers are averaging 21.6 points per game while allowing 29.5. They are producing 348.2 yards of total offense while giving up 364.4.

Trends:

Oakland:

  • 3-0-1 ATS in their last four games in Week 9.
  • 4-1 ATS in their last five games on the road when facing a team with a losing record at home.
  • 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.

San Francisco:

  • 2-6 ATS in their last eight games on a Thursday night.
  • 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall.
  • 1-5 ATS in their last six games at home.

The Winner Prediction

This contest should definitely be a scary one, making everyone feel like Halloween was extended for a day. Both of these teams gave up big fourth-quarter leads plus this is a short week. Expect this to be an unbelievably sloppy game.

The Raiders can’t stop the run, which doesn’t seem like a big deal against San Francisco who can’t run the ball. The team with the better talent is the Raiders who still have a quarterback who was an all-pro at one point. He may not have very many weapons, but Carr is still the best player on the field.

The Pick: Oakland Raiders (+3)

The Total

The total is set at 46.0 for this game, which is a pretty high standard for two teams that are averaging just over 40 points combined between them. It’s true that defensively they are averaging over 60 allowed combined, but no one should expect these offenses to put big numbers especially in a short week. You should not only look for the under but expected to go way under.

The Pick: Under 46.0
