In 2017, a mostly unheralded Predators team got hot at the end of the regular season and snuck into the playoffs, then swept the 1-seed Blackhawks in the first round. Nashville’s defense, led by Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis, and Mattias Ekholm, allowed just three goals the entire series.

Things look similar this year. After a rough start, the Preds won 20 of their last 28 games to snag the Central’s final playoff spot and now face a Hurricanes squad with the third-most points. Part of Nashville’s early-season struggles stemmed from defensive injuries — but since Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, and Alexandre Carrier have been fully healthy and playing together, this team is 3-1-0.

The first four NHL playoff games have all been decided by one goal, inherently benefiting the underdogs. Oh, and 81% of bets are on Carolina.

Pick: Predators +1 (-106)

DFS Value Play: Mattias Ekholm ($3900)

Cleveland Indians vs Los Angeles Angels Betting Pick

First pitch is tonight at – 6:38 p.m. PST

This contest shapes up to be a bullpen game — and the Indians have the big edge. Sam Hentges and Patrick Sandoval are starting, and neither has made it through the fifth inning this season.

Cleveland’s pen has been the model for years, and 2021 is no exception, with a sparkling 2.70 ERA (league-best). Los Angeles, on the other hand, has an unsightly 5.25 bullpen ERA, 27th in MLB.

The fact that the Tribe have lost seven of their last nine is a factor in this valuable line, and this is a great bounce-back spot for them, given the circumstances: The Halos are traveling cross-country after a thrilling win in Boston on Sunday. Look to the dogs here.

Pick: Indians +120

DFS Value Play: Eddie Rosario ($3000

St. Louis Blues vs Colorado Avalanche Betting Pick
Puck Drops at 10:00 p.m. ET

The playoffs bring many a new bettor into the fray, and what do novice wagerers love more than anything? Overs. Two of the first four games went over, and Lightning-Panthers Game 1 was an electric score-fest, so we’re fading the public consciousness and taking the under.

Sure, the Avalanche were an excellent scoring team this season, but they were also extremely stout on defense — especially at Ball Arena, where they allowed a league-low 1.93 goals per game. Expected Colorado starter Philipp Grubauer has been tremendous on home ice as well, notching a .935 SV% and 1.60 GAA.

With the Avs installed as heavy favorites, Vegas does not think this game will be close, which also helps our prospects. Time to root for defense.

Pick: Under 5.5 (-108)

DFS Value Play: Devon Toews ($4900)

Todays Parlay Play of the Day:

Parlay

First Leg – 8:05 p.m. ET

Gerrit Cole has been magnificent to start the 2021 campaign, going 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA and 0.68 WHIP, and allowing just two runs total over his three road starts. Don’t think too hard about taking the Yankees here against the Rangers.

The Padres have picked up some serious steam after a slow start, winning six of their last seven. Yu Darvish and company can keep the party going against the lowly Rockies.

Pick: Yankees and Padres Parlay (-103)

Prop

Chicago White Sox @ Minnesota Twins – 7:40 p.m. ET

On a team filled with hitting talent, Tim Anderson has arguably been the most consistent, especially lately, batting .383 with six multi-hit games during his current 11-game hitting streak. Considering his .563 career average against Minnesota starter J.A. Happ, let’s sprinkle on him getting multiple hits again.

Pick: Tim Anderson Over 1.5 Hits (+151)

Bold Bet

Washington Nationals @ Chicago Cubs – 7:40 p.m. ET

Jon Lester returns to Wrigley Field for the first time since departing Chicago in the offseason. It’ll be emotional for both sides, but we’ll give the edge to the player instead of the team. Additionally, Juan Soto has batted .273 in six games since returning to his full-time role in the outfield, and his lack of home runs over that stretch could be remedied by facing Adbert Alzolay (1.7 HR/9).

Pick: Nationals +133
