SITPicks.com 9 Sports Betting 9 What Sport Has The Most Gambling?

Sports gambling is so big that wagers get put on virtually any event one can find. Whether it’s darts, gaming, or some other niche sport, lines are available through certain sportsbooks to get in on the action.

With that said, most of the focus is on major sports. What sport has the most gambling? it depends on the region, but a few sports stand out.

Soccer (Football outside North America)

No sport attracts as much action as soccer worldwide. Given the popularity and high viewership of professional leagues, it’s not surprising that billions of dollars are bet on games every year. It becomes an even bigger phenomenon around the World Cup with the top countries competing in front of an international audience.

Reports have tried estimating just how much money is wagered globally on soccer alone, and it’s somewhere north of $50 billion per year. This can range from the top domestic leagues to very regional betting on a few local semi-pro teams.

A reason that football attracts so much action is that the sport lends itself well to both in-play and pre-match betting. At any moment during a match, sportsbooks now offer in-match betting to capitalize on evolving odds. Since matches are low-scoring, huge line changes don’t happen too much in-match.

Soccer’s popularity contributes to it being wagered on more than other sports. People become even more intrigued when some easy wins get posted. With a larger pool of potential gamblers interested in football than in most other sports, it’s a numbers game at that point. Even if plenty of fans never place a bet in their life, so many others get into the game like never before with money on the line.

American Football

Soccer is king worldwide, but in the United States, it’s all about the NFL. It has been the most popular sport in the United States for several years now, and the schedule plays a big role in making betting very popular. Instead of having to focus on nearly a nightly basis, most games are on Sundays.

For the games on other days of the week, they usually have the schedule to themselves. This gives a lot of focus on that one particular game to put together parlays or prop bets.

Everything leads up to the Super Bowl, which is a huge event for sportsbooks. So many people pay attention to the Super Bowl compared to other events that sportsbooks will put together every prop bet possible to encourage new gamblers. This could mean wagering on the length of the national anthem, the color of Gatorade poured on the winning coach, and more.

Don’t overlook the popularity of college football as well. Since most of those games happen on Saturdays, the schedules don’t get in the way of each other too much. Fantasy football is big as another entertaining option similar to gambling.

Horse Racing

If there’s one sport still going strong thanks to gambling, it’s horse racing. It doesn’t show up near the top of the popularity list for sports traditionally, but there’s horse racing going on all the time around the globe.

The allure of horse racing is that so much of it relies on the animal. While a jockey can help to some degree, it’s betting on nothing more than pure speed. Races also go by so quickly that no one has to wait on results.

Is It Easier or Harder to Bet On Popular Sports?

The great thing about betting on popular sports is that it’s very easy to find lines. There will also be a ton of prop bet opportunities since the demand is there. However, seasoned gamblers are not always crazy about popular sports.

With so much popularity, there is a lot of knowledge surrounding line placement. If a person’s into a very niche sport, there might be more opportunities to take advantage of inaccurate lines. At the same time, sportsbooks might not offer nearly as many opportunities with those sports.

At the end of the day, most people end up betting on sports they follow and care about. With sports like soccer and football being so popular, of course they will get a lot of money put on them.
